| Job Duties: | Job Summary Buildings cannot be built according to any whims and fantasies. There has to be certain structural aesthetics which have to be taken into account. Only after it can a building be built in a unique design. The person who does all the hard work behind such unique designs is the structural engineer. They can also be called civil engineers, but it depends on the construction firm they work for. Read the structural engineer job description which carries all the information about their main duties regarding the building of structures. Structural Engineer job description • Working closely on construction plans with clients, architects, and other professionals • Developing design ideas using CAD software • Investigating the properties of materials like glass, steel and concrete, and advising which is most suitable • Working out the loads and stresses on different parts of a structure • Using computer simulations to predict how structures will react under different conditions • Inspecting unsafe buildings and recommending options for repairs or demolition • Making sure that projects meet legal guidelines, environmental directives, and health and safety requirements • Preparing bids for tenders • To make calculations for the internal and external structure of the building, and to calculate the thickness of the steel girders to be used • To take into consideration the piping and air conditioning systems, and calculate what kind of material will be required where, as there are many different kinds of materials that are used in constructions • For external structure, they have to consider the number of people that will be occupying the building, the furniture and other equipment that will be present • They have to finalize the design and be present at the site of the construction in case there are any on site problems • A good working knowledge of construction methods, materials and legal regulations is important. • Supervising project teams • Giving progress reports to clients and senior managers |
