Job Title: Pharmacy Intern
Job Duties: Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, participate in patient care through monitoring of patient’s drug therapy for safety, efficacy, and cost effectiveness with emphasis on utilizing pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic principles. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, participate in quality improvement programs including DUE, ADR, Medication error reporting, and clinical pathways. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, provides accurate and timely drug information to patients and medical, nursing, and other allied health professionals. Ensure cost effective drug utilization. Prepare and present staff development programs and intradepartmental in services. Attend continuing education programs to maintain clinical and professional proficiency. Participate on inter-department and intra-departmental committees. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, oversee the medication distribution system. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, screen all physician treatment orders for appropriateness of drug therapy. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, evaluate and clarify drug orders prior to dispensing. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, review patient profiles, interviews patients and consults with other health care professionals to assure appropriate drug therapy. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, reviews accuracy of the issuing of medications by pharmacy specialists and technicians. Under the professional supervision of the preceptor, assures timely delivery of medications relative to patient needs and departmental policy. Ensure proper storage and inventory of medications. Comply with and ensures the facility drug use process complies with the all federal, local, and policies and procedures concerning controlled substances. Register as a “Pharmacy Intern” with at least one state board of Pharmacy and the CNMI Health Care Professions Licensing Board. Ensure compliance with USP<797> aseptic technique and infection control. Provide care that is appropriate to the specific chronological age, developmental age, social maturity, and cultural background of the patients being treated or served. Identify problems related to aspects of drug use control and offers constructive ideas for resolution. Ensures that policies and procedures related to drug distribution are followed and complies with all other health center and departmental policies and procedures. Observe the preparation of chemotherapy medications in a manner to protect the working environment from exposure. Participate in educational rotations to the Pharmacy departments at the Health Centers of Tinian or Rota. Attend and participate in other programs, committees, meetings and functions required by the hospital or the pharmacy. Safety and infection control is the responsibility of all employees, must report unsafe and unsanitary practices and conditions to a supervisor. Treat all patients, co-workers, physicians, and visitors with sensitivity, dignity, and respect. Perform other related duties as required by the Pharmacy Manager.
